Sony's excellent Xperia Z3 Compact has only just gone up for pre-ordering in the UK and it has already gone on sale. The Xperia Z3 deal, offered through a couple of online retailers, drops the Xperia Z3 Compact price from 429 GBP to just 348 GBP. That's a massive 80 GBP discount and it's still on pre-order! According to Amazon UK, the Z3 Compact will be available on September 29th.

Whether this is a permanent price drop from the two retailers I found the price on or just a temporary thing is anyone's guess. Regardless, if you're in the market for a high-end smartphone that's not the size of a school book then now is the time to buy this phone. The Z3 Compact is a great little device with all the power and internals as its larger brother the Xperia Z3.

In our hands-on Xperia Z3 Compact review we were impressed by how great it feels and how good the performance is. Usually when holding a phone of this size its either really slow or its an iPhone, so having a smaller screened Android will full on internal specs is a pleasure. We only wish more OEMs would follow suit.
  • Pre-order the Xperia Z3 Compact from Clove for 349 GBP.

What do you think of the Xperia Z3 Compact? Would you pre-order one at this price?

iPhone 6 launch: why do Android users care more about Apple events than Android ones????

The numbers don’t lie: our stats show that you’re much more interested in the iPhone 6 than in any single Android device, story or event. Is Apple the firm that you love to hate?

iphone6 side crop
The iPhone 6: do Android users love to hate it? / © Apple
The iPhone 6 launch was bittersweet for me, because I like phones and I really hate U2. I never used to - I used to be a huge, huge U2 fan - but since the turn of the century I’ve found them insanely annoying. The thing is, though, that instead of just ignoring them I keep finding myself tuning in to their launches or reading their interviews for no other reason than to get really annoyed at how annoying they are. I wonder, are you the same with Apple?
We’ve been looking at our server stats, and as Shakira nearly said, the hits don’t lie. The iPhone 6 launch was more popular than the entire IFA show, let alone any single Android product launch. To put it into context, the only way the next Nexus launch can generate the kind of traffic the iPhone 6 launch did would be if Google glued a bunch of Nexuses to a naked Miley Cyrus, strapped her to a missile and fired it at Russia.
I’ve just checked and this is definitely AndroidPIT, not ApplePIT, so there can only be two explanations. Either you’re all closet Apple fans, or you’re hatewatching.

Anger is an energy

keynote apple iphone6 8
Own up. How many of you watched the Apple keynote? / © Apple
Hatewatching is a TV term, but it describes what I do with U2 and what I think many of you do with Apple events: you watch it not because you care, but because you want to get really angry and share that anger with like-minded souls. It’s a sport of sorts, a challenge to see who can build up the biggest head of steam and unleash the most acidic response.
I get it, I really do. I was glued to the U2 bit of the Apple event, unable to tear myself away from a screen that I really wanted to punch. I turned my headphones up louder so I could hear how bad the song was at higher volumes, maximised the video window so there was nothing to mitigate the sheer irritation of Bono, squirmed in my seat as Tim Cook and Bono exchanged obviously scripted quips. I hated every second of it.
It was brilliant.
Am I right? Is Apple the firm you love to hate, or is something else happening?

How to deactivate location feature in photos on Android!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We're all concerned about privacy these days, and it's sobering to remember that something as simple as taking a photo can reveal a lot about you. The photos you take may be geotagged, meaning that they have GPS co-ordinate embedded into them that give away the location you pressed the shutter.  If this concerns you, it is possible to turn off location tagging.

Snap a photo on your Moto X or Nexus 5, and you probably don’t think about much more than ensuring that the shot is perfectly framed. But when you upload an image to a website, the metadata encoded into it could easily reveal your location. If this is something you'd prefer to keep private, here's how to disable the feature.

Launch the Camera app and tap the menu button followed by Settings.

Move to the right hand tab by clicking the cog icon, and you should see the Location tag label. If it is set to On and you would like to disable it, tap the setting and then select Off.
If you ever change your mind about location tagging, you can easily re-enable it.

Location tagging can be useful, and you can easily re-enable it if needed. © ANDROIDPIT
Simply repeat the same steps, but select On rather than Off, and you'll see a warning that your location can be determined from image while the feature is enabled. Tap OK to acknowledge this.
If you lose track of whether location tagging is enabled or disabled, just look to the top of the screen in the camera app. When the feature is enabled, you'll see a crosshair icon in the upper row of buttons so you can see at a glance.

Sony Xperia Z4 release date, news, specs and rumors....!!!!!!!!!!.....Take a loot at it.

Though the Xperia Z3 was just revealed at IFA 2014, Sony's speedy release schedule means its next flagship device should be hitting us early in 2015. With this in mind, we're taking a look at what we currently know about the new handset.
androidpit sony xperia z3 xperia z2 1

Sony Xperia Z4 release date

The original Sony Xperia Z was released in February of 2013, with the Xperia Z2 following a year later in March 2014. Since then, Sony has said it plans to forgo the the yearly release cycle that most manufactures have for their flagship handsets and release them on a bi-annual basis. With this being the case, the Xperia Z3 was announced at IFA 2014 and will be arriving shortly (sometime in the Autumn is the word, but we’re expecting to see it in September or October).
What all of this means for the Xperia Z4 is that we may see it appear in April next year, but maybe even as soon as March to coincide with the 2015 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which takes place between the 2nd and 5th of that month.

Sony Xperia Z4 price

Let’s be real. The Sony Xperia Z range is known for premium materials and hardware. The Z3 features a glass and aluminium housing, 20 MP camera, quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 5.2-inch full-HD display and 2 GB RAM. Oh, and it’s waterproof. The Z4 will be at least as powerful, so you can expect to pay top-dollar when it does appear.
To give you some sort of idea on pricing, the Xperia Z3 is going to be available for pre-order in the UK for £549 off-contract, and the 6-month old Z2 currently goes for £399 (down from the £549 RRP). We expect similar sort of prices for the next generation.

Sony Xperia Z4 specs

Sony has previously stated that it doesn't believe in QHD technology. The trade off of battery power for the benefit of a few extra pixels does not make sense for many manufacturers, and unless battery or QHD technology changes significantly in the next 6 months, we are unlikely to see it on the new device. Having said that, reports are circulating that Sony has experimented with QHD displays on a number of prototype models… maybe one of these might become the Z4?
Qualcomms Snapdragon 810 processor should be available by the time the Xperia Z4 rolls around. and it will boast a number of significant benefits to smartphone user. The 64-bit architecture which supports more than 4 GB RAM means that the 810 will likely make an appearance on a number of flagship smartphones, and we hope to see it on the Z4 also.

Sony Xperia Z4 features

It's going to be safe to assume that Android L will be running on any device released next year, so you can bet the Z4 will come with Android-Key-Lime-Lemon-Lollipop-Meringue-Pie as standard, along with all of the benefits it brings.
That's basically what we think we know about the Xperia Z4. We'll update this page with more information as we get it, until then, you might want to check out how the Z3 compares to another modern flagship in our Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 comparison.

How to take a screenshot with the Nexus 5??????.......!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are many reasons for wanting to take a screenshot on your phone, and different handsets handle things in different ways. If you have a Nexus 5, there is an easy technique you can use to capture what is displayed on your screen.

Once you've mastered the technique, you can take screenshots on your Nexus 5 in a flash. © ANDROIDPIT

Hardware button shortcut

The quickest and easiest way to capture a screenshot on your Nexus 5 is to use the built in method. All you need to do is to press the power button to the upper right of the handset and the volume down button to the left at the same time. It is important that the buttons are pressed simultaneously and held in for around a second. You might need to practice a few times to get it right, but once you have the knack, you'll find it very easy in future.
androidpit nexus 5 screenshot
Once your screenshot has been captured you can access it in Gallery and share it to apps.© ANDROIDPIT
You'll know that the screenshot has been captured when a white outlined flashes around the edge of the screen – you'll also see confirmation in the notification bar. You can access your captured image in the Gallery by looking in the Screenshots folder.
Images can then be sent to other devices, or used in various apps by tapping the share button at the top of the image preview and then making a selection from the list of options that appears.
You could opt to install an app that takes care of screenshots for you, but using the hardware buttons is quick and simple.
Do you use the hardware buttons to take screenshots, or have you chosen to install a dedicated app instead?

Hangouts update: 10 things you need to know about Google Voice and Hangouts Dialer...!!!!!

Google Hangouts has just been updated with Material Design and has also had Google Voice integration finally added. Plus, there's a new Hangouts Dialer app to add to your list. If you're as confused as we were, stick with us as we explain the new landscape of Hangouts, Hangouts Dialer and Google Voice.

Hangouts now supports incoming and outbound calls

Google Voice, as great a service as it is, has been stagnating for ages. Google Voice functionality has slowly been migrating to Hangouts, with incoming calls being supported for a while now. The latest update adds outbound calls to Hangouts, effectively disemboweling Google Voice entirely.

Google Voice is (almost) dead

Google Voice is still there as a standalone app, but it is on serious life support. It won't be long until Hangouts completely consumes it and it drifts into the mists of apps you used to use. Adding full Google Voice functionality to Hangouts is a big deal for Hangouts, putting it on the same VoIP playing field as Skype.

International calls are cheap

Because the Google Voice outbound call service has been included in hangouts, you're going to want to consider using it to communicate with friends and family as you currently do with Skype. Hangouts offers some pretty competitive international rates.

Hangouts looks different

The first thing you'll notice is that hangouts has a new Material Design overhaul, but it's super easy to navigate. You have two active tabs and a slide out navigation drawer. The two tabs are for your contacts and for your messages: simple.

Swipe to archive is gone

If you had the same issues I had with accidentally archiving chats then your clumsiness has been rewarded: because swiping now switches between tabs, Google has removed the swipe to archive function from the new Hangouts. Now if you want to archive a Hangout you simply long press a chat in the Hangouts inbox and then the box icon up top with the arrow on it. Alternatively, from within the Hangout itself, hit the menu button at the top right and look for Archive.

You should install Hangouts Dialer

Go to the Play Store and install Hangouts Dialer too. You'll notice that you now have an additional tab in Hangouts: the Hangouts Dialer. That's right, the Dialer app simply gets absorbed by the Hangouts app, so there's no need to open it separately. If you do, you'll simply see the triple-tabbed Hangouts.

Link your Google Voice number

If you're already using Google Voice (which is limited to those in the US), just go to the settings of Hangouts to turn Google Voice text messages and voicemails on. Once you've done this any old messages you had in Google Voice will not be visible in Hangouts, and messages appearing in Hangouts will no longer appear in Google Voice. Make sure to check the box under your Google Voice number to have any incoming Google Voice calls re-routed to Hangouts.

Voicemail notifications come to Hangouts

When you miss a Google Voice call you'll now get a voicemail notification from Hangouts instead. It will appear at the top of your Hangouts list as a new message with a voicemail icon like a tape. Open the Hangouts notification and hit the play button to listen to your message.

Calls to the US and Canada are free

With the update, calls to the US and Canada are now entirely free. You don't even need to be using the Google Voice service to take advantage of the new deal. It's now a basic function of Hangouts.

Your iPhone friends haven't been forgotten

Google has also updated the Google Voice for iOS app and outbound calls will also be made available to your Apple-owning friends and family. Web users of Hangouts will also be able to make and receive calls to both Android and iOS as soon as the feature is made available on the server side for your connection.
Are you using Google Voice with Hangouts? Do you think Hangouts can now compete with Skype?

Power, not pixels: why Sony's skipping 2K screens in the Xperia Z3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.................

Firms are falling over themselves to bring out phones with 2K screens. Don’t believe the hype: unless you're buying an enormous device you'll operate with your nose, you won't notice the extra pixels.

Sony says it thought about 2K screens, but the downsides outweigh any benefit / © Sony Mobile
Imagine if a smartphone manufacturer told you that their handset was best because it was full of ghosts. "Ghosts?" you'd ask, surprised. "Yes," the manufacturer would say with a serious face. "It has ghosts. None of our rivals' phones have ghosts, and that's why this phone is better."
"So, er, what do they do?" you might ask. "Ghost-y things," the manufacturer would reply - and when you asked why you couldn't see them, the manufacturer would tell you that the reason was because ghosts are invisible.
When firms talk about 2K smartphone screens, they’re talking about ghosts.
In 2K screens, the ghosts are all the extra pixels. The manufacturer says they’re there and that you should care, but you can’t see them. You can only divine their presence by the price tag of your phone and the spooky way your battery keeps draining.

Spooky screens

On anything smaller than a phablet, 2K is a marketing gimmick. Once you go beyond 400ish pixels on a four to six inch screen, you suffer from the law of diminishing returns: more pixels draws more power and costs more to make, but the difference you can see is minimal at best and non-existent at worst.
The reason for higher pixel densities is to make pixelation, aka the jaggy bits on text and images, disappear. Once something has disappeared it can’t disappear more. You either see it or you don’t - and at a typical viewing distance of eight inches, the 450-ish pixels per inch of the typical Android screen makes pixelation disappear. With a pixel density of 534 ppi, a phone such as the LG G3 may have more pixels than rivals, but you need to be looking really closely to see any difference.
lg g3 display close
The L3 G3 has 534 pixels per inch. That's a lot of pixels. / © ANDROIDPIT
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, LG chief research engineer Lim Min-Ho said: “using their average eyesight and under the assumption that people look into their smartphones from a distance of 20 to 25 centimeters, we concluded that for this group [20 to 30-year-olds with great eyesight], a pixel density of between 500 to 550 pixels per inch, or ppi, was the maximum level of resolution they could recognize.” Even that’s pushing it unless you usually operate your phone with your nose. That's why Sony decided to prioritise battery life over pixels: its Xperia Z3 eschews 2K screens to deliver 2-day battery life instead.
We’ve been here before: pixel density is the smartphone equivalent of camera firms’ obsession with megapixels. It’s just a number, and other things are much more important. Let’s exorcise battery status anxiety first before we start worrying about ghosts.
What do you think? Would you sacrifice battery life for more pixels?
